How a man plays a game shows something of his character, how he loses shows all of it

October 31st, 2009 David Nicholson No comments

So this week we’ve had a chance to show all of my character lol.

Last week was a winning week and I was delighted…however suday came along and like it always seems to do on a sunday, things took a turn fo0r the worse!

Started out fantastic, rob came over to watch thwe NFL and we decide to grind some donkaments….we both start to biuld some stacks, and before oo long im deep in the Sunday Warm ip ($215 early stars tourney) and in the $150k on tilt. manage to scrape into the money for a measly ROI in the warm up never rele had a stack big enough to make any real waves, but was going supe rstrong and down to the last 50 in the 150k ($56k up top) and had a 3times average stack in the $750k gtd…then we bust the 150k 42nd for 600bucks….better than nothing but, SIGH bust the million stupidly early, then bust the 7450 all with 40 minutes, Rob is still gpoing strong and approaching the $$$ in the 750k (have 5%) am technically +$ from tourneys which we cant hardly ever say lol and there were a couple of tasty fish hovering over the .50/1 HUplo tables….+£170 vs this one guy and he quits leaving me a table open, rob sits and says “you wanna flip for my last $37 on full tilt?” sure why not….WHY NOT? becasue 21 hands later he had $1.2k thats why bloody not lol. Now im straming and steam on into money where we manage to play so fucking bad its unreal -$1.4k pretty much all at .50/1 as well, sick how bad i run at tht stake. One highlight of the week was tilt playing th ALEA £0.50/£1 and should have been loads down but luckily managed to get out of a £500 pot vs rob AIPF 10 4 vs 9 3 lol….he limps 93 (not a fan of the limp) i raise 10 4 (not a fan of the raise) he 3bets  93 (not a fan of the 3bet) I shove 10 4 (not a fan of the shove) he calls 93 (probably a loosing call lol) so alll in all a failry poor hand throughout lol

Wednesday – $400, Thursday despite being +$1.1k was -$350, today -$450…..including -$1.2k from sunday, a -$300 tourney sesh on saturday were talking -$2.7k for the week! yay!

But luckily Live we have have some results. +£300, -£450, -£400….

Including this comedy hand I flop 568 with 97, get it in vs 97hearts…obv runners a flush lol SIGH

okayed a couple of cool pots this week online, mainly coolers or ouitdraws for me – WHERE TO START LOL ;)

This was potentially a bit spewy but the guy was playing SO FAST and i was running super hot so just kinda went with it on the turn lolhttp://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/998983

This was the end of the weeks run good at EXACTLY thias moment!http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/998985

This was a particulally brutal one :( http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/998986

Same guy, 5 minutes later lol http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/998987

Same GUY lol http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/998988

AND AGAIN sigh http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/998990

TILT RAISE the river here and it costs me http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/998991

Nice Flop for me here http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/998992

Another Horror,http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/998995

Finally was nice to pick this hand up vs ROB lol not bhad one of these for a looooooong time ;) gd for 11bucks ;) http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/998997

northern boys love gravy!!!

Firstly, was wicked to see so many nutters at DTD this weekend. Good on you all hope to see u there as much as possible as well as at the club. As i live in the midlands i cant get there much but when im up at my parents house, theres nowhere id rather play.

I havent been playing much recently.. through lack of internet etc..

I dont even know if anyone reads this appart from those who write on it, but if anyone does and wants to improve their game a little bit here are some of my key tips, patronising i know, but try em out and if they dont work for you then who cares.

THE MOST IMPORTANT RULES IN POKER according to Ash.

1. DO NOT LIMP INTO A POT                    ————  > (limp = flat call preflop)

2. NEVER PLAY A POT OUT OF POSSITION UNLESS YOU HAVE TO

3. THINK

(1. little sidenote, if someone else has already limped into the pot, then u can of course limp into the pot behind them with something that is a monster when it hits, such as a low-medium pocket pair which is huge when it hits a set, or medium suited connectors which have a ton of equity when they flop a combo draw. IF YOU LIMP INTO A POT AND MISS DO NOT BLUFF AT THE POT HARDLY EVER. you wont get any respect for it. )

1. ok, limping vs raising when its folded around to you. the purpose of poker is to accumulate chips and win money. if u limp into a pot there is only one way of winning the pot, hitting your hand and betting.

if however you raise before the flop, there are 3 ways of winning the pot. firstly everyone folds to your raise and u win the blinds. secondly you could hit your hand and bet and win a pot vs an opponent with a lesser hand. thirdly you could miss your hand but bluff your opponent to win the pot.

clearly 3 times as good! there are also other factors, if u limp then u are telling your opponent how strong u think your hand is, so they have a HUGE advantage because they can narrow your range of hands down to all the ok but not good enough to raise hands. LIMPING IS HUGELY EXPLOITABLE. dont do it! if your hand isnt good enough to raise with, dump it!

2. possition is massive in poker. absolutely massive. sometimes you will be in the big blind with a raiser and like 5 callers or something and have to call with your pocket pair to try flop a set or with your king queen suited becuase u are getting more than ample odds. those are the only times that u should play out of possition. if you stick to playing in possition the game becomes so much easier. you have all this information on what your opponent thinks of their hand by what they do, be it check or bet.

3. THINK. the amount of times that i ve played without thinking and somehow fumbled my way to victory. i thought i was good because of that. i was not. i was not.

the key to poker is thinking. what makes sense? think about what hand makes sense for your opponent to have, given their actions up until this point in the hand.

furthermore, think about what makes sense for you to have by the way you have played your hand, and if you are against a tricky opponent, try to throw them off a bit by representing a hand less good than your own at some point in the hand.

or, firstly, if you are bluffing (which you definitely should be sometimes) dont just aimlessly bet and hope to win, try and formulate your bluff to represent something.

for example, you raise with 78 from the button and get called by the big blind.

the flop is something like   10   4   2.

he checks, you bet, he calls.

if the next card is another 2. your opponent is going to giv you no more credit now than he did on the flop. so dont fire again, just let it go.

if the turn is higher than a 10, it makes much more sense for you to bet.

lastly, im going to start videoing some of my sessions for personal analysis, anyone interested in seeing any? tournies or cash. (online obv) i might go over with commentary afterwards or post here why i did certain things. (yes jamie, i do want to be phil galfond!)

VOLUME!

October 24th, 2009 David Nicholson No comments

Hello again NUTZERS!

well its been another pretty hectic week! Hence why no blogs for a bit, decided this week would be about trying to repair my online monies, bad tilted flipping sessions, some run bad, bigger than ideal withdrawals and some general donkeyness meant my online monies werent looking healthy. I am now virtually busto on cake so back to full tilt.

As you may or may not know I play mainly PLO HU on full tilt, at a variety of stakes, which has been quite swingy of late, I’ve played a ton of .25/.50 .50/1 and 1/2 with a session of 1/2 6max and some limit O8 2/4 thrown in there….ran extremely well at $1/$2 this week, averageing 62bb/100 over 900 hands! (which is incredible lol) played some rele good stuff tho at this level including an EPIC battle vs another REG whihc lasted for 300 hands on just the one table – resulting in +$400 lildavefish’s way – ran gd and won the only big pot in that exchange so wouldnt expect to run at 50bbs+ vs that opponent. Also had a great session vs another player where i won $1k from him in 68 hands! he was o super tilt and I ran good…easy game rele, so +$2.2k form $1/$2 last week, alsdo enjoyed some good success at $0.25/$0.50 – played a litte over 5,000 hands at thsi level and finished about $1k up – think il be grinding these stakes a lot more for the next few weeks, actually found it equally as profitable in comparison to the games that run as $1/$2 – game selecting is tougher at 1/2 and i’m sure there are some regs that multi-account and i bump into them by accident!

on a negative note, played a lot of $0.50/$1 aswel – did horribly. Played uRockMyRoll over 300 hands and lost over $550 to him, he ran gd but I rel cudnt figure out how to beat him, gonna look over some hands vs him and see if i can figure him out – i thought he was rubbish at first, was up $300 on him within the first 50 hands (so actually down $750+ over 250 hands lol) but he very tough…will hopefully book a few winning sessions vs him soon. Another similar session vs SimonVK at these stakes was down $380, but only played about 120 hands with him and lost som prtty stupid hands vs him, I certainly wouldnt think twice about playing him again, finsihed – $1.2k at .50/1 which was kinda gutting cos ti ruins my graph lol – if i ever figure how to put images on this thing il post a graph up here…

PLAYED some pretty cool pots these last few days,

This one I espcially Enjoy…http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/976693

Cool hand here, I rasie the button with KQJ6 dbl, full top wrap and get check called rele loosely then we hit the second GIN turn card ;) http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/975653

Flop Pretty huge here, unfortunate for him he as a set… http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/975658

Had this guy pretty much soul read – up $625 on him @ $0.25/$0.50…just ur standard 4th pair river call ;) ….http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/975656

Really tricky spot, I raise A10Q8 dbl and get 3bet, he hadnt 3bet me often so i peel, he check calls flop with bottom pair + gutshot, I turn a 3card wrap to go with nut fliush draw and get check raised pot at $82 he has $112 behind, I can peel here easier but I have plenty of equity vs SETs two pairs etc, the only hand i dont wanna see is KQJ10 with a spade because that has me struggling, but even still against the amount of times he two pairs + sets im in great shape to get it in here, I miss a ton of value if i peel and the flush striaght hits he can easily fold a set…so happy to just get it in a river the nuts…:) http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/975655

Horrible…http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/975663

Really cold flop, full wrap and back doory flush draw, he has exact same hand but with a pair….:(http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/975660

Really horrible turn and river this hand, wasn’t as tough a call as  i thought it was at the time, he has AQxx so often its actually quite easy to raise call it off here, http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/975659

Cant possibly play this river any worse…I either check back or bet fold, this guy is good, so betting isnt profitable imo, because he folds out all dangling spades, xxx8 spades, over pairs almost always, and of course he is check calling all small houses, and as long as he doesnt think i have 88xx enough he is c/rasiing all full houses, espcialy as I was tilting and getting a bit spewy! http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/975662

this is an interesting hand, I raise AAxx and flop a set get called, Jhearts brings the flush on the turn, when he calls the turn he has a flush virtually 100%, I have blockers for all sets and two pairs + this guy was reasonably nitty. He is going to raise the striaght a ton on the flop and will fold it most times on the turn, I bet the turn because I have Ahearts so am virtually never getting raised, I am happy to make the pot bigger if I fill up on the river, he calls so he 100% has a flush, when the board doesnt pair on the end I check raise allin representing the nut fllush (i have the blocker) he tanks forever….http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/976721 SIGH.

Thats pretty much all exciting hands out the way there were a few more I wanted to share but Omaha Manager isnt working and trapsing through poker tracker to find them is tilting me to the limits!!  Next week gonna try play 7k hands on full tilt, 4k at .25/.50 minimum, and then try get in profit at $0.50/$1 and hopefully will find a couple of gd $1/$2 games running, if I win another $3k inb the next two weeks will start to look at some $2/$4. Also got a pretty gd 50% rakeback deal on carbon+ a rele gd bonus so going to try play 3k hands of 50nl on there and grind the bonus out…boring, but worth it as long as i dont bust the account lol

Live plans im probably off to DTD this evening for the cash games then play the £100 tomorrow this tourney looks like quite a lot of fun so gonna give it a go, bust level 5 as per usual and be back in leeds for the £2/£2 dealers choice game at 9. excellent! you never now might ship a few dimes would be nice! Played the £100 dbl last week at naps bust the 200/400 level i think…sigh one day il play well in a fucking tournament would be nice for it to be tomorrow!

Outside of poker not really been up to much, my amazing run at dinner flips came to rather ugly end last night. aftr faded 4out of4 including a £250 anthony’s bill, a £60 steak bill at naps, a£54 bill betwen me and rob at ziizi’s and the £65 pizza express tab me and Rob went to cosmopolitan ladt night had a ridiculous 3 course meal was amazing, had an incredible 10-oz serloin cooked absolutly amazing and a really nice bottle of wine…gg £120…seriously though cosmopolitan is well worth a visit if you’re ever looking for a nice quiet meal out in leeds, its poorly adverised and the name does it no favours, but the food in fantastic and we had a quirky american waiter who was good fun…hopefuully will run better next time!

Thats about all from me, off to do some actualy work now, agreed to help a guy i know who just bought a restaurant in leeds so going to do a shift for him in the kitchen!! only 4 hours thank god!

Thats all from me, Jamie Syke’s magical return to the uk ends on monday which will be very sad – have enjoyed his re-appearance in the uk!

GLGL can drive again now whoooo so gonna try hit the club this tuesday!

DTD Binge Weekend Part 1

October 24th, 2009 James Brady No comments

Hey,

sorry I haven’t posted for a while, I shall try to get s regulsr weekly blog in from now on. Online has been pretty standard lately, had another couple of deep runs , I had a bad spot in the 22 dollar 20 GTD with 30 left where I 3 bet pre with AJo from bb after  btn open he peels with 15 bigs left board A86 and he somehow peeled pre with AQ, ( the quite annoying was that I was gut 3 bet folding pre but whatever). So roll is still around 700, I’m still confident I can roll it up with small stake mtts and trying to qual for some 55 dollar tourneys as the sats are so soft.

As I speak im at Jono’s for the 20 20 weekend DTD. Basically two 112 freeze’s one today one tomorrow , the structure is 10k chips 30 min levels and guarantee is 20 GTD, which is pretttty sick considering the buy in. So with about 10k FTW on both days , lets hope its shipppppppppppppppp time. Played 50/1 NLHE last night and well lets say it didn’t go too well, ended up loseing two buy ins, which was pretty soul destroying. Got QJ in on KQQ versus Kx after shoving his check raise 70 bigs deep , turn K, the guy stonefaced said that it was a bad card for him on the turn and then casually flipped his K7o , FML! I then got in a horrible spot late when I was tired and a tad rattled after having to fold mid set after worst card came on turn 4 way.

I iso a weak limper with Ah Qd for 6x with 90 big stack, a LAG I have a fair amount of history with after playing with him at Circus alot in my last year at uni. He peels, limper peels, flop Q52 2h, I took the decision to almost pot lead the flop to gain value, the LAG btn calls. Turn 7s. I bet 22 with 50 behind, in hindsight a check on ther turn in this spot would have been a better line. As by betting I’m forced to bet call alot taking into account my history with him (him making moves on turn) and the price i would be getting. He asked how I had left and set me. I SNAPPED ROFL. Which was kinda tired/I’m folding vs you ever kind of scenario. He coyly asked if I ‘had the Queen?’ thus making me think that he WAS in fact making move then slowly flipped 52c for bottom two. River 10. FML/SLowroll Part Deux. Its obv not the best of spots and reality I can’t beat much on the turn but im NEVER folding flop obv and I’m probs calling down anyway on turn if I check so I guess my two cards were doomed all along in that spot.
Just about to pick up Willster88 from train station and then off for breakfast, will be good to catch with Will and then hopefully winning 10k pounds will just be icing on the cake. However, you know the not best of starts to the weekend. minus 250 pounds if you include train travel and copius red bulls. Im guna try and record all the key hands from the 20 20 tourneys on my phone and post a kind of hand history on there which could be pretty cool.
Anyway off to the dreary nottinghamshire afternoon I go to…. victory!!!
Cheers
Brady

Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement…

October 17th, 2009 David Nicholson No comments

Hello All!

Sorry for no blogs this week, its been a pretty tough week for everyone!!!

So back wend of last week was dissapointing, I had some unnessercary bills to pay pulled some dimes of the internet to cover my life expenses and found tht I was running low on disposable income lol – so this week is ALL ABOUT THE GRIND! and I was itching to get back into beating the live games, been a little frustrated by lack of action online and you cant beat the feel of real money in your hands! SO grinding would sugggest heavy volume and the slow and steady biulding of profit! Lets break the week down day by day!

Monday, cooler outdraw every which way I went lost loads!

Tuesday, as above – then went out and got pissed instead lol got my jacket, jumper and glasses locked in space till thursday, got a girls number which seemingly was fake – to sum it up, broke blind and rejected!

Wednesday slept, watched all the episodes of the WSOP main event got ridiculously tilted, went to pizza express then back to bed early cos was horrendoulsy hungover!

Thursday….man o man thursday…I woke up feeling fantastic, rejuventated after a great nights sleep and excited about the arrival of a Mr Jamie Sykes back in blighty!!! 2 hours before jamie is due at mine i get on facebook chat with Tom Macdonald who is a ridiculous friend of ours…you might remember him as the winner in the tourney jamies finished 2nd in! he snaps accepts the invite to join us for an evening of degeneracy and we hit naps for the 20rebuy, obv we’re all drawn on the same table and the action becomes ridiculous and the 3 of us in for £800ish combined…sigh…run good macdonald ov aquires all the chips and binks 3rd when he rele should have won it…ul…I play cash, get fucked and fucked some more…mange to scrape to near enough evens….still down huge for the night and week…go back to my flat at 5am and decide to go on a $200 spin up session where we start at 5/10 NLHE with $200, spin up to $400 go to 10/20, spin to $1k go to 25/50 until we had $5k then could happily quit! needless to say this doesnt go well lol….sigh…..i decide im off to bed where iw ill stay until at least 6pm friday.

Friday – get woken up by jamie leabving my flat at 1pm he is off to get a hire car. see ya on saturday jamie. 1/2hour later woken AGAIN by a phonecall from jamie saying tht he had the keys to the hire car in his HAND before the women realised he wasnt 23 and couldnt hire the car, jamie tiltingly shouts at her then storms off…”dave we are on call lane having lunch come join us” uuuggh rele in no mood to solicalise but wanna spend some time with jamie and tom b4 they go there seperate ways so fuck it il go, i wake up sling a scruffy hoody and a full tilt poker cap on and head for call lane….

Call lane for those of you who dont know it has several bars, a nandos, macdonlds wokon, revelution and few other nice eateries within a small radius but my phone has run out of battery so I use a pay phone to xcall jamie, “Dave we’ve binked a table at anthony’s come join” so I now have to go to the poshest restaurant in leeds in the middle of the day dressed like a tramp with a baseball cap on….disgrace! We decide to ball it up and order the 7 course taster menu (lol @ £60 a head!) the food was dellicous but strange as hell…one dish was Caremisled jellyfish  with braised pigs cheek and pigs ear! one dish was pork belly with crispy black spagetthi and some sort of squid accompniment – DELICOUS! so bill time comes and we flip for the £220 lunch bill, we use a euro each (coutry/facey as we call it!) tom peels first….FACEY, I peel…..FACEY get the fuck in FREEROLLING! me and tom are jumping now in our scruffy outfits shouting COUNTRY!!!! COUNTRY!!!! COUNTRY 1 TIME!!!!!! jamie painfully peels a country off and boom TY for dinner Mr Sykes! We were th only ones left at this point and the restaurant staff looked bemused as 3 20yr olds stumble in at 2pm on a friday wearing caps and hoodys, eat a 7 course meal each then flip for a £220 bar tab whilst jumping up and down screaming COUNTRY COUNTRY!…ar fun times….

So i say goodbye to jamie and tom mac for now….was awesom espeind time with those guys again, it always makes for an interesting day when Sykes + Macdonald are together!! and go back home for a nap. Wake up at 8 and hit Robs to collect my glasses he has picked up for me (yay visoin again fantastic!) we go to napoleons where the £2/£5 table is full so we put ourselves on the list and hit therestaurnt (after all it has been over 4 hours since my 7 course lunch! – which was free btw!) I decide tht basically…THINK BUSTO – ARE RUSTO, THINK RICH, ARE RICH! so i opt for the fillet steak and it was delicous! time comes for the flip again and this time me Joe and Rob eac put a pile of money on the table for the waitress to select, Joe makes a taqctical error and opts for a crinkly note in the middle of the two – basically the secret to this type of flip is to 1) make the money look as unapealing as possible – I like to flaten in as much as i can in a bid to make it look tough to pick up! 2) try predict which angle the waitress will come from and choose the oppostie side – sounds so simple but more often than not they take the lazy option….Joe opted for the middle of the 3 which was always going to be a mistake, espcially as his note was crinkly as easily grab-able….gg joe and another free meal for DAVID! after a week of horrible run bad iv faded £300 worth of food flips and very very full lol, so to the game!

I buyin for £500 and swiftly and with zero stress have chipped up to £900ish, then flop an open ended striaght flush draw, someone leads £90 and I make It £285…some1 PEELS wtf behind me and the original better tank tanks then calls leaving £180 behind. comes 3h turn he goes allin…I am faced with calling £180 into £1260 with 15 outs lol…..ok im allin, he has kings the river is a red 6 and he starts to celebrrate…”YES WAT A GOOD CALL, WAT A FUCKING GOOD CALL, THT IS A PROPLY THOUGHT OUT CALL” mate your a dickhead and you played the hand horribly…shut the FUCK UP! he snap left the table and has owed olly £400 for ages and when olly went up to ask him for it he refused…shows the kind of perosn we’re dealing with…so pull up agian, continue to run poorly until and then pick up AA in the BB and get a frickin WALK this game hasnt had a walk since 1992 except on this occasion! fml! find myself tilting badly with a £300 stack when im in for £870, so go for a walk and olly stone comes over to tell me to chill out – good advice olly i was steaming! clear my head rebiuld to £600 loose a bad pot with AA and tilting again, then with £300 i jame a straddle squeeze with 44, get called by K6, 86 and JJ. obv bink the 3 5 A 6 7 board yaaaaaaaaaaay now have £1k! next handloose £300 with AQ vs A4 on a AJ2 board….sigh, then grnid it up and up and down and until with 5 minutes to go I call a raise on the button with Q5spades, flop come 3s 8s 5c….get about £1k in vs 78 and find the 6s on the turn! whooooo out and out! wat an intense fucking cash game – but this will go down as the best of the weeks days lol – unless we bink the million this sunday will probs be the best lol

OK so. a will talk actuall poker for a little bit now lol. had the pleasure (as it always is) to be sat at the table with the great Mr. Olly Stone this evening and he got himself involved in a HUGE hand which was as bizarre as it was valuable!…. Il talk you through it its a cracker!

The table has an interesting dynamic, we have a few crazy spewboxes, me and olly and chinese nit – george and old school full time grinder who is a very good NL cash player, steady and solid all the time…and Faz who normally deals the game, but when he doesn’t he plays and he is FUCKING MENTAL raising and calling a re-rasing hand after other hand its incredible! olly limps Faz’s strdlle with KK. George next to act makes it £65 and faz calls, olly makes it £265 playing £700 behind. George tank calls of a £3k stack and Faz who has the whole table covered calls aswel. flop comes 9 9 3.

right, wtf does Olly do here. he has £700 with £1k in the middle and an overpair so cant every fold, both guys have him well covered and he is first to act. He has two options, go all-in or check call. he is in a spot where he should never be called with worse, so in tht theory its a check call, hope someone spazzs out with some sort of hand (AQ/AK). but you are NEVER folding this flop regardless of action, so jaming is effectively the same thing because it would unusual for anyone to bet with worse or bet light in this spot, Jam gets value from QQ and possibly JJ which is a case for it but i rele dont know….would be interesting to hear what everyone thinks lol – he coudl even bet £300 and call, altho tht is unlikey to induce any spazzyness, because of the two players in the pot…ANYWAY George tanks forever and calls with 88! rele suprised here asgood a player as george is this is a pretty desperate call…Olly’s range to limp raise Faz is going to be quite wide, so its feesible that Olly could be limping AJs type hands to 3bet faz, however it wasnt faz that raised it was George vs whom Olly wont be limp raising OOP particulally light at all, probably AA,KK, QQI think both sat so deep I cant imagine olly raising with AK (at least he certainly shoudlnt be!) I think george called the £200 because it looks obvious olly had an over pair and with faz in the pot aswel the implied odds to bink an 8 are huge, then convinces himself olly has AK on the flop and calls – even with faz who is more than capable of having a 9 here nto act behind him (Faz reveled 4,7 offsuit lol) anyway olly holds and takes a nice £2.5k down…very nice very nice!!

So today (saturday) going to take a day off, as appealing as the £100dbl at naps is I cant quite bring myself to play poker today + have some friends coming over…and I desperatly need a haircut lol…if im bored tonight will probs end up going down…sigh…just pleased to be nearly out of make-up!

tomorrow’s plans are to grind the sunday’s online, then maybe go down to the £2/£2 dealers choice games but rele wanna bink 50k minimum tomorrow and we’re running good so you never know anything can happen!!

1TIME!

ok, sorry nothing to poker related in this blog just been quite a rolloer coaster week thought you all might enjoy sharing in it! hopefully next week will be a bit calmer  – but then, WHERE’S the FUN in THAT eh?

GL all when i get my sodding drivers liscence back im gonna come bink a tourney at the club get my tourney form back on scratch!!!

Take CARE

Really Important Thoughts…

Was getting my soul handed to me at ProEvo the other day Rob was talking about the start of an article he is mid-writing on the subject of what he calls ‘validation.’ this got me really really interested in thinking about this topic fro a personal level…(this is really self indulgent and long winded so skip forward to last paragraph for prop-bet updates!!)

Clever word Validation, which in itself requires quite a lot of thought, open to different interpretation on a personal level, but basically it refers to the reasons/experiences and thought processes which lead us to making decisions and how we justify them to ourselves personally which will then affect our decision making processes in the future. to analyse myself personally I’ve been thinking really hard about thoughts i’ve had both before and after big decisions…one of the most important things I ever learnt in poker is that results orientated post hand thinking is extremely dangerous, I play a ton of hands awfully and get out of jail with some good fortune, and play some hands really well…but got unlucky at the wrong time and wound up loosing, sometimes Iv made some calls/folds which at the time I thought we’re really really good, but since reflecting think I was lucky that I was correct because my thinking behind it was incorrect…anyway i’m babbling!  Time to really examine myself!

Im actually quite self conscious as a player and I think this comes from over analysis. I love to read about hands other people have played, I spend tons of idle hours reading forums and articles and I am fascinated by peoples thought processes, but i really hate talking to people about hands they’ve played because  I struggle to put my thought processes into words on the spot and often feel a bit silly afterwards – on a similar note I really hate railing people  in tourneys – Im not a terrific tournament player and for the same reasons as above, maybe  this is a huge flaw in my game and maybe I should have a bit more conviction – I remember a time when I thought I was miles better than I was, and how much trouble that got me into – as soon as you start thinking you’re the best and refusing to listen and accept that other people’s thought processes are valid then you’ve basically prepared yourself to stop learning and all that will do is leave you where you are whilst everyone gets miles better and trust me this is a trap I see tons of people I know falling into all the time and trust me I’ve been there YOU’RE GOING BROKE. After all David Beckham was coached for years by people he is better at football than, would he have been as good if he had said to them ”Im better ythan you so you ca teach me nothing”…I’ve had conversations with some  people about hands where I have offered and opinion and they have  instantly told me I’m completely wrong, I genuinely don’t care whether people think I’m right or wrong but I have never told someone they are wrong in a hand in my life, when I do talk about hands I try to imagine the thought processes behind every decision and think about what I would have thought and what that thought would lead me to do…maybe  i’d have played it completely differently or exactly the  same but everyone’s thought process has merits and it is very foolish to disregard people’s thought processes as inferior to you’re own (after all no1 ever tries to play hands badly), you might think on a level 16 times above that player but you can still learn from understanding why someone did something…Have I gone completely off the topic here lol but this is the centrepiece of how I try and improve as a player.

I am happy that I am a very good poker player and I truly believe there are very few games at my limits both live and online that I would be outclassed in. I know there are a ton of people out there who don’t rate me as a player at all, there are plenty around leeds, but honestly I really don’t care, a couple of people whose opinions really matter to me but that aside I’m not that bothered. I had someone the day in DTD say to someone else on the table “id be really surprised if he is a winning player” then turned to me and ask “when you play do you normally win?” I said “everyone wins at some point” and left it like that (incidentally I did play that hand like a melon lol) , I am actually happy people some people don’t rate me because it only trebles my edge over them.

Maybe I do lack a certain degree of confidence deep down in my game, after all I still have plenty to prove, but its important for me to remember that I have all these things to prove to myself, no-one else  and getting sidetracked by searching for validation from outside me could become dangerous. I still plan to post in forums, talk to my friends and ask lots of opinions on hands because this is an amazing way to improve, Its important to remember what made me a good poker player, I have personally and on my own intelligence and experience developed a style of poker that is unique to me and is successful, so I am always going to come across opinions from a different style which clash from mine should definitely not be self conscious about having different opinions.

Sorry to rant on hopefully most of you will have gotten board of this pointless rambling after line four and skipped straight here for teh updates! I have found this blog really helpfull since doing it, a really good platform for me to put my thoughts in order and hopefully people are enjoying reading it. So last few nights good and bad, good was that I not only saw but got to sit next to average dave for a while in the £100 at gala before exploding 40bbs in less than 3 minutes – good to see mr Average on good form! Also saw Thad milling about which was nice, he got pretty unlucky getting Aces cracked in rather ugly fashion. BAD bust the tourney like a chump wont go into detail – lets just say that aggressive chip accumulation went badly. GOOD played craps with chris walker for the first time, won £300 without a fucking clue what was going on…I think the idea is not to throw a 7 and this guy went on a roll where he didn’t throw a 7 for fking ages and we all won a ton of money! BAD me and olly went on our legendary blackjack spinups…gg craps profit +some…sigh BAD loosing £2.2k pot in horrendous fashion got all the money in with 47 ona 3 5 6 board came running 4 7 FML someone folds Aces in the hand aswel such a screwed up hand! GOOD managed to take 9 buyins off a regular opponent at $1/$2 HUplo…pretty much owned him throughout + ran good which was nice felt good…BAD lost $1k to ROB doing Omaha flips…last two hands were for $1.5k+ feel free to relive my agony….

Man…I Love Steak!

October 8th, 2009 David Nicholson No comments

So the title of this blog pretty much sums up the majority of my thoughts over the last 3 days! The other day I was hungry in town and went into a subway, then I turn around and leave and hesd to the market and purchase 5…yes FIVE sirloin steaks for £5! so eaten a lot of steak and its all amazing…what a bargain! So im pretty happy about life right there!

On a slightly less enjoyable sidenote, got myself banned from driving on tuesday, got caught going 57mph in a 30mph and got a 14day ban as a result….which seems a bit ridiculous and is inconvieniant but Iv learnt my lesson and on we move!

Not played a ton of poker lately since my good week on the HU PLO tables, had a really good week vs some regs and kinda killed my action of a little bit, plus not too many fish about lately so been chilling out and eating steak!!! Going to start putting some increadsed volume in from today though lazy period over! Saw a really funny hand the other day though which really made me happy!

Live game @ Gala £1/£2. This absolute moron who has been playing the big man all game gets himself 3way on the river on a A A A K K board. there is about £20 in the middle and this chump bets £25. he then gets raised to £50, so he ships for £300….the guy snaps him off with A3 and then he starts berating the guy for a)playing A3 and for “slowplay raising” the river…I just sat there and laughed and watched he reload with my eyes widening!

Got an account with blackbelt poker the other day on Jamie Sykes’ advice and it looks like a really really good system. because of the awesome rewards system you dont get rakeback which kinda sucks but still gonna try jump up the grading sytem cos it looks like there is a lot to gain out of it with potential live tourament staking and acces to advice forums, also I like iPoker, the software is kinda tilting but the games tend to be really really soft so hopefully gonna do well there and win some dimes!  Have my new screenname – ty4thdimes which i love lol

Thats all – saw Paul Male and Rocca down at gala the other day which was really nice, and saw Steve Bolton, Peter Lee and Ken Vanzo last night at Alea which was really nice. Ken came second again he absolutly OWNS the comps at alea its quite impressive!

Any chance of another GUKPT qualifier?

Gl gl everybody will defo try get down to the club as soon as I can drive again.

Update – Excitement, Dissapointment, Coolers, Profit and Expensive Mice – Pretty Standerd…

October 1st, 2009 David Nicholson No comments

Heyy all

Firstly WELL PLAYED to Mr. Mark Boyle for becoming the champion! gg mark now get urself and that £600 over the Leeds anbd we’ll spin it into some KKKKKKKKKK’s :) !

Played my usual sunday haul of tournaments this week – I love sundays, the un quenchable brimming excitement, which escolates everytime you win a pot and check the lobby and stare gobble eyed at a 6 figure top prize feeling more and more like its heading towards your bank account, until the horrible, soul crushing dissapointment as you bust AQvs10,10 27 off the money, leaving me to go home and wollow in the $2k hole that should have been hundreds of thousands…O well there is always next sunday!!!

I have made an descion that we are going to win $100k one sunday this year wether is busts me or kills me!!! either is looking possible lol

SO this sunday I didnt put in a massive session I just concenrated on the big ones that I like. Was too late for the brawl so played the 50k, the 750k a bunch of $75 gtds, the mulligan, the 75k and the super turbo. All went as usual, Except a really deep run in the 50k, after a long spell in the top 10  i lost a big flip with about 200 left AK vs 66 and was about the average, after limping around for a while i rebuild a decent stack as we enter the money, before running out of steam and finishing 67th for a little under $400….sigh

Then the really exciting run of the day came in the 750k gtd, run and played excellently all tourney and found myself healthily above average along with theGrooouuuch with whom I had a 10% swap! and david amie 1-2 looking all the imminant!

Lost a significant pot AQs vs AK for a lot of my stack and ended up bustring 163rd….sigh for $490. jamie went on to get unlucky in a few spots and finished 70th (ish) for just under $1k. UL jamie obvs was rooting heavily for you!!!!

SO lately been turning my attention to HU PLO, been playing $1/$2 and its been going very well, a couple of interesting hands, but pretty standerd stuff mostly, this is quite a comical hand, http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/878542

lol, nutz striaght 3card straight flush draw/2pair turned 3rd nuts…sigh

I took a pretty creative line in thius hand, really thought he had K8xx, or maybe AK67 some hand like this, pretty confident shove on the end for me. http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/878550 (this guy was really good actually)

Super Thin Value bet here, but had been playing with this guy for 1 hour HU over two tables, and he started ouit playingn very well, but got spewier and spewier as the session went on, Thought that he might call AA here – he calls with KK as it happens on a pretty horrendous board…http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/878562

Another Hand I played Vs thiscomeslast http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/878563

Played a ton with this guy which I would swim through the oceans to do anytime – pretty awful, he gave me a little present here!

http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/878545 and http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/view.php/id/878552

Put a few hands up on pokerHandReplays all here http://www.pokerhandreplays.com/userhands.php/id/3214 if you fancy checking a few out! Jamie even came and played a few hands with me, manged to run substantially better than him tho..!! ;)

Not Played any live lately, except the freeroll, which was a bunch of fun, enjoyed in particular by Chris Deeley READING MY soul  calling my all-in wih Q4 diamonds!! probs goes without saying it was happily in front…:(

Still not decided r.e DTD this weekend…could go but probs wont, Jamie and Ash are in spain I cant go have to be in court tomorrow…Criag, Rob and will both arent going either plus live BR looking a little shaky atm following some poor results and bad living! gonna grind away online and hit the casino on friday for the £2/£5 game at napoleons and maybe play the £10rebuy on saturday havnt played that in a while and its always gd fun!

Was strolling through town with Rob the other day when an interesting argument started up about how much the most expensive computer mouse you can buy on the high street is…i decided to put my wild head to one side and take a logical sensuble approach to this argument (always a mistake) who would pay more then £30 for a mouse, I was perfectly willing to accept there MICE available at this price and that people would be happy to pay – wireless, bigger, more ergonomic for whatever reaons people who spend a lot of time on their computers (such as myself for example) would pay up to this amount for a good mouse – but over £50!! SURELY no-one is this stupid! So as we walk past PC WORLD I snap take the under on £41.98 for the lunch bill and in we go, only  to see a mouse for sale at…£85!!!! WHO THE FUCK would spend £85 on a mouse! absolutley rinsed…re-flip on thee most expensive mouse mat…or should i just get a life/girlfriend…lol probs the latter

Thats All from me, Will update again shortly when somethign exciting happens!! DONT HOLD YOUR BREATH, might tery get over to the club on sunday might take a day off from my winning 100k goal its getting a bit draining the constant suicide inducing depression after bustinng the Brawl, the sunday million and the 750k in the same half hour…dammit
